Dead Island 2 could be re-released later this year, according to reports.

In a recent episode of the Sacred Symbols podcast (which ComicBook discovered), host Colin Moriarty hinted that Dead Island 2 could be announced again this year. Fans may recall watching a reveal trailer for Dead Island 2 at E3, however, the project was later cancelled due to unfavourable fan reception and backlash.

Deep Silver, the game's publisher, has hinted that Dead Island 2 may be re-released, but nothing concrete has been revealed until now. If the rumour is true, the game might be revealed and launched in 2022, but there has been no official comment from Deep Silver or Dambuster Studios.

The game is a follow-up to Techland's 2011 game, Dead Island, which garnered mixed reviews, and the company went on to find considerable success with Dying Light and its sequel.

Dead Island 2 Could Be Making a Comeback in 2022

Dying Light is sometimes regarded as a spiritual successor to 2011's Dead Island, as it incorporates elements of zombie combat, melee, and parkour. The bulk of the gaming world, though, would agree that Dying Light was the more polished affair of the two and that, as a franchise, it had lost most of the lustre that it had when it was first released.

One of the more perplexing reasons why fans were disappointed by the 2011 game was the game's amazing cinematic trailer. The trailer is acknowledged as one of the best game trailers ever made, but it drastically misled the final product, which turned out to be a lot lighter and non-serious, in sharp contrast to the sombre and melancholy trailer.

Most people in the community did not expect Deep Silver to follow up on the 2011 release with a sequel, however, the game was revealed during E3 2014. If the game is to be re-released, the publisher must find enough value in the IP to justify a re-reveal nearly 8 years later.

It will be intriguing to see what Deep Silver has in store for Dead Island 2 and whether it will be able to gain traction in 2022.
