Xiaomi has confirmed a partnership with German camera manufacturer Leica for its upcoming smartphone. The Leica imaging technologies will be used in the camera system of the upcoming Xiaomi flagship phone, which is expected to be the Xiaomi 12 Ultra.

Xiaomi has also confirmed that the phone will be available in July of this year. It will first be available in China, followed by international markets. The partnership had been rumoured since the previous year, and with Xiaomi's confirmation, it will be interesting to see what this means for consumers.

The partnership was announced on social media by the company. "Today, I'm delighted to announce that Xiaomi and Leica camera has developed a global strategic partnership in imagery technology," writes Leijun, Founder and CEO of Xiaomi. We're entering a new era in mobile photography by combining a photography legend with our innovation. July will be full of exciting events!" The phone will be released in July 2022, according to the founder of the Chinese tech giant.

Xiaomi 12 Ultra Could Launch in July, Expected Specs

While the company has not confirmed anything about the device or its name, the Xiaomi 12 Ultra is most likely. Xiaomi has also confirmed that its upcoming flagship phone will be equipped with Qualcomm's most recent mobile chip, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. According to previous reports, the device will use Sony's upcoming IMX989 sensor. This high-end sensor could be 1-inch in size and debut alongside the Xiaomi 12 Ultra.

On the back of the Xiaomi 12 Ultra, there could be a large circular camera module housing four sensors. A 50MP sensor will be one of the four sensors. The device is also said to have a 48MP ultrawide camera as well as a 48MP telephoto camera sensor with 5x optical zoom. More zooming capabilities could be provided by the fourth sensor.

This is not the first time Leica has worked with a smartphone manufacturer. Huawei collaborated with the German camera manufacturer for its smartphone in 2016. Xiaomi is currently collaborating with Leica. Many smartphone manufacturers collaborated with camera manufacturers last year to develop imaging technology for their smartphones. Vivo, for example, has Zeiss, Oppo, and OnePlus have Hasselblad, and Realme is said to be working with Kodak.
