Android 13 Update Tracker

Android updates are always exciting because Google incorporates the latest software innovations such as new Google Assistant features, animations, themes, and numerous other under-the-hood changes. With many phones still waiting for the stable Android 12, Google has already announced Android 13, and the Android 13 Beta 1 was recently pushed.

Google, as usual, released the developer preview first, followed by three Beta updates. Finally, once the system has reached stability, the stable Android 13 version will be released later this year. As is customary, the Google Pixel devices are the first to receive the updates, and once Beta 2 is available, we can expect a few OEMs to release Android 13 for some of their phones.

In this guide, we will look at all of the top features and latest news related to Android 13, as well as the expected release date of the OS. Finally, we have listed a list of all the eligible devices that are expected to receive the Android 13 update.

Android 13 Expected Release Date

Google released the first developer preview of Android 13 in February, and the company released the first Android 13 Beta for Pixel devices on April 26. According to Google's original timeline, the second beta will be released in May, which will coincide with Google I/O 2022. Beta 3 and 4 are expected to be launched in June and July, respectively, and once the platform has reached a stable state, Google expects to release the final and stable version of Android 13 in August 2022.

Android 13 Top Features

With Android 13, Google has prioritized privacy and security features, at least in developer previews. There are also some visual changes, and the majority of the other changes are happening under the hood, where users cannot see them, but Google is adding all of the new features to improve the overall user experience and performance of the Android device.

Photo Picker

The new photo picker feature in Android 13 enables users to securely share photos and videos with other apps. The picker 13 will securely bring both local and cloud-based photos. Apps can use the photo picker APIs to access shared photos and videos without requiring permission to view all media files on the device, which is a huge win because you are not giving any apps unnecessary access to all of your media files.

Nearby Wi-Fi Devices Permission

The new vanilla Android version includes the new NEARBY WIFI DEVICES runtime permission. This permission is required for apps that request commonly used Wi-Fi APIs and allows apps to discover and connect to nearby Wi-Fi devices without requiring location permission.

Quick Settings Tile

With the introduction of a new tile placement API, Google is making it easier for users to discover and add tiles to Quick Settings. Developers will be able to use this API to add their app's tiles directly to the set of active Quick Settings tiles, making it easier for users to discover tiles in the quick settings area.

More Material You Design

On Android 12, Google introduced the Material You Design, a system-wide theme engine. With version 13, the company extends Material You beyond Google's app to all icons, allowing users to choose icons that inherit the tint of their wallpaper and other theme preferences. Developers can now include a monochromatic app icon and a change to the adaptive icon XML in order for their app to adapt to the Material You theme.

Per-app Language

Although this feature has been discussed for several years, it was released alongside the first developer preview. With this feature, you will be able to use an app in a specific language without affecting the global system language or the language of any other app. At first, only a few select apps will have this feature. This can be useful for multilingual users. To access the settings, go to Settings > Apps > All apps > select any app> > Language.

Install Apps on Guest Profile

If you are the owner and create a guest profile in Android 13, you will be able to select which apps can be installed on the guest profiles. Data between owner and guest users will not be shared, and if the guest profile user wants to use any apps, they must sign in.

App Drawer in the taskbar

Google began prioritizing the Android experience on tablets and foldable devices with Android 12L. The taskbar first appeared on Android 12L and version 13; if you have a large screen device, this will be enabled by default, and you will see six apps as well as an app launcher.

Clipboard editor overlay

Google has launched a new clipboard tool. A clipboard overlay preview appears at the bottom of the screen when you copy text, a link, or an image. The preview includes what you just copied as well as an edit button in case you need to make a quick change. If you copy an address, Google Maps intent will appear next to the edit button, and the same is true for phone numbers and links copied.

New Quick Settings Tiles

Tiles in the quick settings provide the quickest access to shortcuts. Google has added a few useful ones to the tiles in Android 13. These are some examples:

Switch Screen Resolution

While this feature is already available on many Android smartphones, including those from OnePlus and Samsung, Google is introducing the ability to change screen resolution with Android 13. This option is available under Display settings. The screen resolutions will be switchable between QHD+ and FHD+.

Media Player Squiggly Progress Bar

Another minor UI change included in Beta 1 is that the music player now supports a squiggly progress bar rather than just a straight progress bar. The unplayed portion of the media/song remains constant, but the currently playing media oscillates up and down like a waveform.

Predictive Back Gesture

This is a new gesture for Android phones, tablets, and foldable that was announced as part of Beta 2. Once fully implemented, this feature will allow users to preview the destination or other result of a back gesture before fully completing it, allowing them to decide whether to continue or stay in the current view.

Using the predictive back gesture, for example, can display an animated preview of the Home screen behind your app. The final stable version of this feature will be included in the final release, and users should be able to test it by enabling a developer option. This feature can be enabled by going to Settings > System > Developer options and then selecting Predictive back animations.

Resource Files For Specifying Per-app Language Support

Google introduced Per-app Language support in Beta 1, and in Beta 2, developers will be able to specify what languages the app supports in the res/XML/locales config.xml, allowing users to choose languages on a per-app basis. Once the developers have updated their app, users can change the language by going to Settings > System > Languages & Input > App Languages > (select an app) and changing the language.

Other Android 13 Features

  • Optimized experience for tablets, foldable, and Chromebooks
  • Flashlight toggle in a quick tap
  • MIDI 2.0 support
  • Activate dark mode at bedtime
  • Revamped screen saver
  • NFC payment support for Work profiles
