According to an Apple patent, the iPad may get macOS-like features in the future.

Apple's iPad is currently one of the most popular product lines on the market. While competitors such as Samsung are attempting to match the success of iPad tablets by marketing their products as the ultimate multimedia machine, Apple has aggressively promoted iPads as a laptop replacement. Although the gadget performs a fair job of getting most tasks done, detractors have long pointed to iPadOS as one of the tablet's "drawbacks." So it appears that Apple is listening to them. According to a new patent discovered by the Patently Apple website, the Cupertino-based company appears to be working on an iPad-like tablet with an interface similar to that of macOS.

User Experience Changes with Keyboard Detection

According to the website, this potential to make iPads run a macOS-like user experience would occur when the device is connected to an external keyboard. The base device is explicitly described in the patent as a keyboard with keys and a trackpad. It may connect to a 'computing device' to provide a macOS-like experience, as well as support for the Apple Pencil attachment.

The patent strongly suggests that the computing device is a tablet similar to the iPad. This is because the device may be seen in the photographs operating independently. For the time being, this is identical to what we see with the iPad and Apple's Magic Keyboard.

An Alternative to Touchscreen MacBook?

However, it is possible that it is not an iPad device upgrade. Instead, Apple could be developing a 2-in-1 detachable MacBook, as OEMs such as Lenovo, HP, Dell, and others are already doing. It's worth noting that Apple has already stated that it has no plans to create a touchscreen Mac. As a result, an iPad and MacBook combination could be an option.

This patent, on the other hand, corresponds to what Bloomberg's Mark Gurman revealed in his 17th edition of the Power On newsletter. He predicted that the iPad would eventually have three modes. While the first will be a touchscreen mode, the second might be a customized Apple Pencil version. The third mode is a 'Pro' mode, which is activated when an external keyboard is connected to it. The patent seen above could be for the 'Pro' mode.

Some indications may also be dropped in iPadOS 16, which will Apple show with iOS 16 and new versions of tvOS, macOS, and watchOS next month at WWDC.
