Apple and foldable iPhone rumours continue to circulate, despite months of expert speculation and predictions. Although the most recent reports indicate that a foldable iPhone would not be released this year or even next year, The Elec website is still providing some exclusive information regarding Apple's plans for a similar handset.

The folding display is the most critical component in a foldable phone, and Apple appears to be taking ideas from Samsung to get it right before moving forward with designs and, eventually, mass production.

According to the source, Apple appears to be testing an OLED screen panel without a polarizer to reduce brightness and thicken the panel. This is something that Samsung investigated and incorporated in last year's Galaxy Z Fold 3 foldable phone. For those who are unaware, Apple has been employing Samsung panels for its iPhone 13, iPhone 12, and previous models. If these Samsung flexible OLED screen panels are the same, we may see the same brilliant and premium quality screen on a foldable iPhone in the future. However, this will only happen if the panel passes Apple's testing process.

In a nutshell, a polarizer in an OLED display guides light dispersion and improves viewing angles. However, it consumes more power to maintain the same degree of brightness, resulting in a thicker panel. Samsung, on the other hand, did not include a polarizer in the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Instead, as stated in the paper, it printed a colour filter on the thin film and added a black pixel define layer.

The removal of the polarizer resulted in a 25% reduction in power consumption and a 33% increase in light transmittance. The Z Fold 3 was able to achieve greater brightness and colour accuracy than the Z Fold 2, which employed a polarised OLED panel.

With Apple apparently testing such displays, it is clear that the company is committed to and working towards folding iPhones. Unfortunately, the wait may be longer than imagined, as some recent estimates indicate that we may not see a foldable iPhone until 2025.
