PlayStation confirmed in a statement to gameswirtschaft that they will not be present at this year's Gamescom, which is scheduled to take place from August 24 to 28. Following Nintendo, Activision, and Take-Two Interactive, the platform owner and publisher is the latest to confirm their absence from the event.

PlayStation has typically been a fixture at Gamescom, but their absence from events such as Gamescom and E3 appears to have cemented the company's move away from annual videogame trade fairs and shows. PlayStation has chosen to reserve new announcements and updates for State of Play and other such showcases, with the exception of Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest and The Game Awards.

Last year at Gamescom, Xbox put on quite a show, with a slew of great first-party announcements and third-party showcases.

PlayStation held a State of Play event earlier this month that focused on upcoming PS VR2 titles; however, another State of Play event is rumored for the end of June. Fans would like to learn more about a number of highly anticipated first-party titles, including Santa Monica Studios' God of War Ragnarok.

While SIE is not attending, it remains to be seen whether Xbox will attend Gamescom 2022, as the platform holder and publisher has been fairly active throughout the Summer. Xbox, along with Bethesda, were present at this year's Summer Game Fest with a Games Showcase - and there are still a number of great titles ready for more announcements and trailers.

Xbox's upcoming projects, such as Ninja Theory's Hellblade II, are prime candidates for new gameplay reveal or announcement, but the publisher does not appear to be ready to reveal more. So far, this Summer has been quite eventful for gaming fans, and there could be plenty more announcements and trailers to come.
