 +  Unique, eco-conscious design

REASONS TO AVOID

 -  Camera could be improved

 -  No headphone jack

If you've landed at this Realme GT 2 Pro, chances are you're looking to buy one of the best phones available right now, but you're not just looking at the obvious options. If I had to describe this phone in three words, it would be powerful, stylish, and dependable.

Realme 9 Pro and Realme 8 Pro are fantastic options for anyone on a budget - but the Realme GT 2 Pro is different; it's the company's first flagship-level handset, aiming to compete with the market's behemoths.

Realme, a bit of a dark horse when it comes to the best Android phones, is one of the year's first manufacturers to step up its game in terms of performance and fast charging. Despite this, this handset manages to come in at a mid-range price, making top-tier features more accessible to even more people, which is something we really appreciate. Let's get started, shall we? (Image credit: realme)

After having launched at MWC 2022, the Realme GT 2 Pro will be available for purchase in the UK and Europe on March 8th. It will be available in two versions: one with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and another with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Prices will begin at £599, which is comparable to the Google Pixel 6 or the Samsung Galaxy S21.

For those looking to spend even less, the Realme GT 2 will be released; keep an eye out for that review,

Unfortunately, neither of these devices will be available for purchase in the United States, and there has been no word on availability in Australia.

REALME GT 2 PRO REVIEW: DESIGN AND DISPLAY

The Realme GT 2 Pro has a unique and distinct design developed by world-renowned industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa, whose signature is featured on the device's casing - it won't be to everyone's tastes, but those who like it will love it.

The Realme GT 2 Pro is available in Paper White, Paper Green, and a classy black colorway if you're not a fan of the texture. It's also eco-friendly because it's made of biopolymer material, which goes well with the paper-like design and is likely to be a big plus for a lot of people.

The plastic construction not only looks good, but it also feels durable; you get the impression that this is a phone that can withstand a few knocks and bumps. However, do not immerse it in water because it lacks an IP rating and is therefore not waterproof. The phone comes with a protective case in the box, but while it prevents damage, it ruins the paper-like design.

On the back, a rectangular notch houses the three-lens camera system, while the selfie snapper is located in the top left corner of the display. A volume rocker and power button, as well as a USB-C charging port, are located around the frame. If you still use wired headphones, it may be time to switch to Bluetooth because the Realme GT 2 Pro lacks a 3.5mm audio port.

This isn't a huge handset, weighing 189g and measuring 163 x 75 x 8mm, so it'll be a good size if you have smaller hands or prefer something more compact.

One of the best features of this phone is the 6.7-inch 2K WQHD+ display, which has a 3216 1440p resolution and an impressive 1,400 nits peak brightness. You can easily use this for watching videos as well as taking and editing photos. There's even a 120Hz refresh rate, which means you'll have super smooth scrolling, swiping, and tapping across all of your apps, including mobile games.

Both facial recognition and an in-display fingerprint sensor are used to unlock the handset, and both work quickly and efficiently most of the time.

REALME GT 2 PRO REVIEW: CAMERA SYSTEM

The Realme GT 2 Pro will suffice for inexperienced photographers. You'll get a 50MP primary camera, a 50MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 40x microscopic lens, which allows you to get up close to your subject and photograph its intricate details (though I'm not sure how useful that is). A 32MP selfie camera is located on the front of the device.

Realme has chosen to forego the telescopic lens in order to focus on its ultra-wide-angle camera, which boasts a world-first 150° field of view. Realme explained that this is because wide-angle cameras are much more popular than telescopic lenses, and you can always blow up the image using digital zoom through their camera software if you want to. This configuration gives you the best of both worlds.

When I tested the camera on a sunny day, I was mostly pleased with the results, which showed shots that were fairly detailed, with accurate colours and a good amount of balance between light and dark areas. There were a few photos that appeared dulled out, and it didn't always focus exactly where you needed it to, but the vast majority of the images I captured were vibrant and sharp. And the ultra-wide mode was able to fit a lot of stuff into the shot without sacrificing too much detail.

One obvious drawback was the digital zoom, which left a lot to be desired because photos came out grainy, making them unsuitable for use online or printing. Although the camera could be improved, those who only need something to take casual photos with will be fine with this.

REALME GT 2 PRO REVIEW: PERFORMANCE AND BATTERY

So, how does this phone stack up against the top dogs in terms of performance? Looking at the specs, you'd think it could compete, with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor and an Adreno GPU. The model I tested had 12GB of RAM as well as 256GB of storage.

It felt smooth and fast to use; I had no lag or loading times, and it responded quickly even when I had multiple apps open at the same time. It's also great for playing mobile games on. To make a long story short, this phone can handle it all.

Backing that up, the Realme GT 2 Pro achieved some seriously impressive Geekbench 5 scores, including 1,243 in single-core and 3,612 in multi-core. That's comparable to other high-end flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and the OnePlus 9 Pro, but it completely outperforms other top phones like the Google Pixel 6 Pro. If you want powerful performance without spending a fortune, this phone is the way to go.

As expected, the Realme GT 2 Pro supports both 5G and Wi-Fi 6, allowing you to browse the web at lightning speeds if you live in an area that supports it and have a compatible Wi-Fi router at home.

A huge 5,000mAh battery powers the device. To see how long it would last, I turned the brightness all the way up and played a local video for two hours. During that time, the battery level dropped by 20%, implying that it would have lasted approximately 10 hours in total.

Now comes the really interesting part: charging times. While there is no wireless charging, Realme's 65W SuperDart Charge is included, as is everything you need. They claim that you can get a full charge in only 33 minutes. Naturally, I put it to the test, and it succeeded admirably.

The phone runs the Realme UI 3.0 interface, which is based on Android 12. You'll get used to it quickly because it's laid out in a very intuitive manner. I'd say the icons, fonts, and colours are a little cartoonish, but if you can get past that, you should be fine.

When you first boot up the Realme GT 2 Pro, it comes pre-installed with a few popular apps like Facebook and Amazon, as well as some less useful ones like Booking.com and PUBG Mobile that you may want to uninstall. You'll get 3 years of Android updates and 4 years of security updates with the Realme GT 2 Pro.

The Realme GT 2 Pro is certain to make waves in the smartphone world. Its top-tier performance, super-fast charging, and stunning screen are flagship-level, but its price and size are more in the middle.

If you're looking for a killer camera, look elsewhere because this is designed for casual and amateur photographers. That's not to say it can't produce good shots; it can, as long as you get the lighting and focus right.

So, while there are a few areas where this handset could be improved, and the design may not be for everyone, I would recommend the Realme GT 2 Pro because it is excellent value for money.
