5G Services Launched

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially launched 5G in India. PM Modi officially opened the India Mobile Congress (IMC) at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. Following the inauguration, telecom operators such as Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone-Idea (Vi) demonstrated some of the 5G use cases at their respective pavilions. The launch of 5G was dubbed a "revolutionary moment" by India's Prime Minister. He went on to say that the launch of 5G services is a gift from the telecom industry to India's 130 crore people.

During his speech at the IMC 2022, the PM also stated that 5G will help bring access to online education for children in villages, which is a major milestone in the Digital India vision. He went on to say that India will play an important role in the world's technological revolution, setting a global standard in telecom technology.

Prime Minister Modi also stated that India will not only be a consumer of technology but will also play an important role in the implementation of technology for the country's growth. "During the 2G, 3G, and 4G eras, India was technologically dependent on other countries." However, India has made history with 5G. For the first time, India is setting a global standard in telecom technology with 5G," Modi added.

5G Services will Boost Digital India

PM Modi Announces 5G Services in India at the 6th India Mobile Congress

PM Modi stated that 5G will create many new opportunities for young people, which is a significant step toward the government's vision of a Viksit Bharat (Evolutionary/Advanced India). The launch will also help boost Digital India, one of Prime Minister Modi's most important campaigns. He emphasized that as India becomes Aatmanirbhar, the prices of electronics will eventually fall (self-reliant). Since the campaign's launch, India has added over 200 manufacturing facilities, up from just two in 2014.

India also has over 80 million digital users and 85 million internet users. Optical fiber connects over 170,000 panchayats in the country. The country has been successful in building citizen-centric services, such as online payments, thanks to such advancements, the PM added.

Aside from day-to-day services, 5G is expected to be useful in a variety of industries and situations. It has applications in agriculture, medicine, and health care. 5G is also expected to aid in real-time disaster monitoring, autonomous vehicles, critical service delivery, and other applications.

Cost of Data Reduced

PM Modi stated that 1GB of data costs around Rs 10 in India. In 2014, the same item cost more than Rs 300. With technological and telecom advancements, India will be at the forefront of the Industry 4.0 revolution. This is the century of India, not the decade of India.

While telecom operators in India have yet to confirm the price of 5G recharge plans, we can expect them to be significantly lower than in some of the leading markets where 5G is already available.

Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio, stated that the company intends to cover the entire country by December 2023. "We will make it very affordable; it should be affordable for every Indian - from the device to the service," Ambani said.

When will 5G Rollout for Consumers in India?

While Prime Minister Modi has officially launched 5G in India, consumers will have to wait at least a few days to get their hands on it. Telcos have confirmed that 5G services will be available in India in October. During the first phase, as many as 22 cities in India will be the first to receive 5G service.
